Callis Mill
Callis Mill is situated in an area known as charlestown near Hebden Bridge. It started life as a cotton mill with spinning and weaving sheds and was hands down the largest mill in Charlestown. In 1861 the mill was shown to be owned by the Lacey brothers, famous for refusing to pay rates to the Sowerby township instead arguing they should be allowed to pay the township of Erringden. In 1926 ownership of the mill was transferred to Messrs Shepherd and Tattersall and a company called Cords Ltd was operating from within. From 1972 the mill was used by Brytmet which made aluminium products. In 1976 the mill was bought by developers who demolished the main mill. All that remains today is the weaving sheds and dye house, the latter being most recently used by Aquaspersions, a german owned chemical company.
