Haslingden Halo
Haslingden Halo is just one of a series of penopticons in the north of England. The 18 meter diameter steel lattice structure sits high on the hills above the town of Haslingden in Lancashire. The halo is lit up using low energy LED's which are powered by the adjacent wind turbine. Clearly visible from the M66 and A56 the halo was funded by The Northern Way as part of the Welcome To The North Program. The surrounding area known as Top Of Slate was the site of stone quarrying for many years before turning to landfill, the area was reclaimed and the land turned to a wildlife haven and picnic area. The pics of the information plaques are hard to read but please feel free to save the pics to your pc and use the zoom function on your picture viewer to read the text. The combination of daytime and night time shots really shows how the atmosphere changes after dark.
