St John The Evangelists
St John The Evangelists is an abandoned gothic style church in the village of Crawshawbooth in Lancashire. Built to the design of architects Paley, Austin and Paley with construction beginning in 1890 and completed in 1892 the church had seating for 616 people. The church was constructed from sandstone with a green Cumberland slate roof, the interior of the church is lined with red sandstone. The narrow spiral staircase of the bell tower leads up to the bellfry before climbing higher to emerge on to the roof of the tower with views of the Rossendale valley that are spectacular. With diminishing numbers of people attending the church and repeated theft of lead from the roof the congregation decided to opt for the church to be made redundant. The church finally closed in February 2012 with worshippers merging with local St Mary And All Saints.
