Hambledon Hill Enemy Bomb Decoy Site
Built in the early 1940's the Hambledon Hill decoy site was one of five set up to protect the town of Accrington from enemy bombs and was a closely guarded secret until the 1970's. The idea was that the decoy site would be lit up in a way so as to resemble an urban area or other target and the enemy aircraft would drop their bombs there instead of populated areas or munitions factories etc. Some decoy sites would even have controlled fires to simulate an area that has already been targeted. All that is left of this decoy site is the control bunker and blast wall. When the site was in operation one room of the bunker would have been used for generators and associated equipment while the other would have been living quarters complete with bunk beds, cooking area and escape hatch. The blast wall just out side the entrance corridor has a single brick missing from the centre to serve as a look out point for the control bunker operators.
