MSC 4001 (Alnwick Castle)
The MSC 4001 previously known as Alnwick Castle is one of two diesel powered engines that were deigned and built by Hudswell Clarke & Co Ltd to be used by the Manchester Ship Canal Company. MSC 4001's sister engine known as MSC 4002 (Arundel Castle) is still in operation on the East Lancs Railway although it is rarely used. MSC 4001 had a power output of 400 hp and a maximum speed of 15 mph. MSC 4001 sacrificed many parts to enable MSC 4002 to continue as a fully working engine. The engine measures 30ft 8in long by 12ft 10in high and 8ft 8in wide and weighs 50 tons. The engine has been in position outside the winfields megastore in haslingden for many years. For anyone keen to see the locomotive for themselves it is on permanent display at the winfields store and is free of charge.
