Hall Of Giants
This brick lined culvert in Accrington has some very nice features, starting with its outfall where the brick tunnel appears out of the ground. Inside there is many side tunnels most of which have been backfilled but there is one with the possibility of further exploration. On the left hand side of the tunnel as you approach the infall is a side tunnel that is the home of an unfortunate ram that was forced over the waterfall when it fell in the river during a flash flood. The ram survived the fall and managed to make its way up the side tunnel where it arrived at its final resting place. The waterfall at the infall is a spectacular sight. Anyone considering a trip to this culvert should be aware that it floods right to the roof at times of moderate rainfall, most of the side tunnels are drainage adits from old mines so when it rains this culvert is an extremely dangerous place to be. The first time I explored this tunnel was actually on a kayak when the water levels were a little higher than normal.
