Lister Drive Library
Lister Drive library was opened in 1905 funded and donated to the city of Liverpool by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie employed Thomas Shelmerdine as the architect for the project, who has designed several other local libraries including Everton, Kensington, Toxteth and Wavertree libararies. The library, in the Tuebrook area of the city was closed in december 2006 due to health and safety fears after a member of staff was involved in an accident at the site. Full surveys were conducted on the building concluding that it would cost several hundred thousand pounds to bring it up to modern standards and ensure future safety of the site. In 2008 it was decided that the library would stay closed for atleast a further 3 years as part of the councils money saving efforts. The grade 2 listed building has now been taken over by Lister Steps Childcare Charity who received Heritage Lottery funding to turn it in to a centre for the community with family support and childcare services. The full refurbishment was estimated to cost in the region of £4.5million and work is currently underway.
