Huncoat Power Station
Huncoat power station was officially opened in 1956. Its life was short lived, only operating for 28 years, closing for good in 1984. Demolition began in 1988 starting with the cooling towers with all but one building levelled by September 1990. In 2004 a controversial proposal was made to turn the site in to a waste management facility which was eventually approved in 2006. However there were many local objections which led to the owners (Omega Atlantic) appealing against the compulsory purchase order. This appeal was upheld leading to the waste management facility proposal being abandoned permanently. The site has now been taken over by mother nature and graffiti artists with some of the work being quite outstanding.
